Buying Equipment For Your Aquarium
Protein Skimmer
A protein skimmer is an essential piece of equipment for your marine aquarium as it is a major cleaning device that removes pollutants. It is very important that the skimmer you purchase matches your aquarium volume and stocking density.
Ultraviolet Sterilizers
This will destroy most or severely disrupt various bacteria, viruses and fungal spores which can have a devastating effect on your livestock.
Ozone
Used with a protein skimmer, ozone cleans the water giving it a higher oxygen reduction potential and increases oxygen saturation levels which can kill free swimming cells of bacteria, viruses and algae.
Eco Aqualizer
It ionizes water and continuosly refreshes and restores water quality. It neutralizes ammonia and imputities, reduces water changes by up to 75%, keeps water crystal clear year-round, impedes and reduces green algae, prevents and helps cure all diseases, increases oxygen and stabalizes pH and strengthens fish's immunity system.
Lighting
Before purchasing your lighting, you must make the decision on whether your aquarium is going to be fish only or a reef tank displaying corals as this will effect the type of lighting you require. For the fish only tank, lighting is purely decorative. Marine white or blue tubes with reflectors will enhance the colours on the fish. In the reef aquarium, lighting needs to be of a higher intensity. Metal halides are compact offering high intensity bulbs, or T5's which are high intensity tubes.
Live Rock
Live rock is a biological filtration system that works along side your protein skimmer. It is also the foundation for growing corals and a good home for gobies, blennies, crabs, shrimps and molluscs, should you decide to have a reef tank.
R O Unit
When making up your saltwater for water changes in the tank or for topping up the tank water, it is important that you only use RO water. RO water has been filtered to take out all of the impurities and chemicals that is in our tap water that is harmful to the aquarium. Although you can purchase from ourselves RO water and ready made saltwater, an RO unit will allow you to do this at home.
Water Management Control Unit
An excellent time saving and monitoring device for peace of mind. Sensors measure and control pH, oxygen, redox and the temperature of your water. It can control appliances such as pumps, UV sterilisers, high and low voltage lighting, ozone units and steering/dosing units. With everything being controlled, it means that you are not spending time monitoring and switching pumps, lights etc on and off as this is all taken care for you by 24 hour timers, which also gives peace of mind whilst away on business, a short break, or on holiday. Call into the shop and we will be happy to demonstrate how it works and offer the best product currently on the market.
Wavemaker Surge Controller
A microprocessor based controller operates your pumps to give natural water movement in the reef aquarium. The pumps can be activated to simulate many different current patterns.
Water Test Kits
An essential purchase whether it be a new or a mature aquarium. Water in the aquarium needs to be monitored for harmful toxic substances in order to balance and sustain water conditions. The must have test kits are pH, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia and phosphate. We offer these and many other specific testing kits for sale, this includes the full range from Salifert, high sensitivity test kits from Deltec and in-shop water testing.
Additives, Buffers & Chemical Filtration
After testing your water, if the balance needs corrected then pop into our shop and we will be happy to discuss the products available. We offer the full range available from Kent Marine, Salifert and a selection from Deltec, TMC and Aqua Medic, so you have plenty to choose from.
